Bouvard and Pecuchet don’t exactly die in the line of scientific duty, but they might as well. Maybe it is because they are essentially copists and not inventors. This man, who jumped off the Eiffel Tower however did die through his invention.
For Flauberts protege and friend, the writer Guy de Maupassant, the Eiffel Tower by the way was a cause of great dismay. It is said, that de Maupassant ate lunch in the tower’s restaurant every day because, as he claimed, it was the only place in Paris from which you did not have to see it!
